Part of the reaction against this system is documented in The Warmth of Other Suns, a beautiful book following several African Americans who leave the South. They attempt to escape this re-enslavement and encounter both welcome and hostility in different parts of the country, mostly in the North and West. The story involves a lot of trains and provides excellent color for what mid-century America looked like.
