The Habsburgs: To Rule the World is a great book tracing the existence of the Habsburg dynasty, its claim to be an inheritor of Rome, and its survival through the end of World War I. It is placed in the middle of the timeline because of its focus on the period of Habsburg power in Spain and Austria, but it covers a much wider span than its placement can easily convey.
