The Big Picture, by Sean Carroll, is what I consider a grand-thesis book. Carroll is trying to persuade the reader that a materialist understanding of reality is correct and that there are strong scientific reasons for believing it.
He moves from the beginning of the cosmos through physics, life, and genes, assembling the concepts that support a materialist worldview. It is pretty convincing.
