Slavery by Another Name looks at how the post–Civil War period—what we tend to think of as the Reconstruction era—was also a period of re- enslavement. The apartheid laws establishing racial separation were used to imprison African Americans at scale. Once imprisoned, they could once more be forced into labor. In this sense, the Civil War was followed by another extensive system of enslavement.
