The unification of Germany, the German Empire, and the Weimar world remain gaps in my understanding. The history of Austria is relatively easy to trace through the Habsburgs, but I am less clear about how the Prussian state worked or how the Holy Roman Empire, the German Confederation, and the North German Confederation evolved into a unified Germany.
I also need to learn more about Bismarck and how he succeeded in bringing German unification about.
